Sensuality, fun, color, pattern, the
textures of painting -- these are
as important to me as the figure
itself.  How can I combine these
with a monotone subject that is
already so thoroughly explored in
painting?  Although a cynic once
told me that nothing of interest
remains to be done with the figure
in painting, the subject is timeless
and the possibilities are endless.

As a visual artist, I have
long been fascinated with
Japanese textiles, with
their abundance of
overlapping and juxtaposed
patterns.  I enjoy playing
with this idea in my
decorative figure work, as
well as in my pattern
abstracts.  I embed the
figure in an energy matrix,
maximizing the energy
of the patterns around the
figure while still allowing
the figure to remain center-
stage.
