Pattern Abstract Art

These unique non-objective art works
are both decorative and philosophical.
They seek order and harmony amidst
complexity, to reveal the "divine
irregularity" of the universe.  Japanese
textiles and my photographic multiple
exposures encouraged me to overlay
and mix patterns in my art.  The result
is the sensual integration of diverse
elements and dimensional ambiguity—
a spatial and spiritual meditation.

As I was assembling
works from bits of
scrap material, I realized
that puzzles could provide
a readymade system of
assembly.  I also like the
sensual shapes of puzzle
pieces. So I started
collecting puzzles at thrift
shops and garage sales,
and created the following
non-objective art works
from them. More info.

As I worked on the
puzzle pieces, I
accumulated
leftover materials
containing the
puzzle shapes. The

My abstract collage art is characterized by a lush abundance of color and texture. My non objective pattern collage art create dynamic and sensuous worlds of ambiguous depth. These abstract art works are built up of layers of textures and decorative pieces in a quilt-like manner. Although their colours may initially attract attention, these abstract art collages become ever more interesting the longer one looks at them. My study of Japanese textiles, and my work with multiple exposures and abstract photography, led me to overlay and mix patterns in my painting. The challenge is the smooth integration of diverse artistic elements, to create order and harmony amidst complexity. Objects are temporary configurations of energy and matter into recognizable forms. Both "solid" form, and "empty" space are full of energy. In my painting and collage, I represent both form and energy -- a moment of visual balance between figure and ground, stability and motion, excitement and composure. The result is spiritual harmony as well as visual pleasure--a sensual meditation.
