Figure paintings, abstract contemporary.

As a visual artist, I have
long been fascinated with
Japanese textiles, with
their abundance of
overlapping and juxtaposed
patterns. I enjoy playing
with this idea in my
decorative figure work, as
well as in my pattern
abstracts. I embed the
figure in an energy matrix,
maximizing the energy
of the patterns around the
figure while still allowing
the figure to remain primary.

Figure painting by San Francisco Bay area artist Sharon Hudson includes abstract figure paintings with bold line and flat color; playful figures embedded in collages of decorative patterns; expressive painterly figures in pastel, graphite, and charcoal; realistic figures and portraits; and simple figure drawings. My figure paintings celebrate the sensual aspects of both subject and media, and have a frankly decorative intent, using bold color, sensuous shape, line, and pattern to animate strong compositions. My figure painting begins with my love of the human figure, and starts with live models. Whether attracted by color, form, movement, or expression, I use media that are swift and sensual, and work quickly to capture the figure. This may complete the figure drawing, or I may work the figure into an expressive, realistic, or abstract painting energized with collage and decorative patterns. I have been drawing and painting figures for over 30 years. My stylistic inspiration comes from masters of sensuality like Gauguin, Klimt, Matisse, Degas, and Van Gogh, as well as related arts like stained glass and contemporary quilt making. My painting also reflects my travels of the past three decades, and abstract forms from Africa and the Pacific Northwest and decorative elements from around the world have all left imprints on my figure paintings.
