Bold, sensual, and spontaneous figures
populate this figure exhibit, in styles
ranging from realistic to expressive to
highly abstract. I sometimes finish
quick figure drawings in dry art media
like pastel or pencil while the model is
posed; others I complete later in painting
or collage. Even in my most realistic art,
I try to balance the character of the figure
with the character of the drawing media.
In many of my figure paintings the figure
and background interact with equal weight
and interest. Visible stroking, bold line, and
patterns create more expressive figures.

Burnt Sienna Figures

The following expressive
figure paintings use only three
colors of tempera paint: black,
white, and burnt sienna. Most
were done on large sheets of
kraft paper. As I worked,
the paper wrinkled, yielding
very rough brush strokes, an
effect I particularly liked. The
wrinkled paintings were then
mounted on a stiff backing.
Most have been framed and
exhibited.

My figure drawings, paintings, and collages range from realistic and expressive to abstract and decorative. My realistic figure paintings and drawings express the sensual pleasure of the human body and the sheer fun of drawing. I always begin with live models. Many of my figure paintings combine drawing with painted backgrounds or collage, to add rich colors or textures to traditional drawing media like graphite, colored pencil, or charcoal. My figure paintings and drawings always begin with live figures. Whether attracted by color, form, movement, or expression, I begin with media that are swift and sensual, and work quickly to capture the figure. This spontaneous portrayal may complete the drawing or painting, or I may work the figure into a complex visual composition, often playful, energized with collage and decorative patterns. Every new pose provides an intriguing new opportunity for expression, whether realistic, expressionist, or abstract. I strive to express the nature of both the figure and the drawing or painting media. Even in my most "realistic" art, I balance the character of the figure with the character of the art media. Visible stroking, bold line, and patterns add energy to the figure drawings, paintings, and collages. My inspiration comes from powerful Renaissance realists like Michaelangelo, and modern masters of sensuality like Gauguin, Klimt, Matisse, and Degas. Realistic figure painting has taken many different directions in time, but figure painting adapts and retains its timeless appeal.
