Playful Figures

These are spontaneous drawings,
pastels, and collages of playful
and whimsical figures. Most are
fairly flat figures interacting with
multiple patterns, showing the
influence of Japanese patterns
and ukiyo-e prints on my art.
Although most of these figures
are drawings in dry media, I
also studied calligraphy in Japan,
which led to more varied and
calligraphic lines in many of my
figures and abstracts.

Playful line drawings of human figures. This "playful figures" exhibit includes humorous and whimsical figure drawings, paintings, collages, and mixed media art, with a Japanese influence. Japanese patterned papers and the simple lines and light mood of ukiyo-e prints characterize these playful paintings and whimsical drawings. My stylistic inspiration also comes from figurative masters like Gauguin, Klimt, Matisse, and Degas. My figure drawings and paintings reflect my travels of the past three decades. My figure drawings and paintings always begin with media that are swift and sensual, and I finish them with in painting or patterned collage. The simple line drawing figures found in Japanese ukiyo-e prints are a major influence on these whimsical figure drawings. The use of pattern as well as the line drawings themselves are a reflection of my time in Japan.
